Why Ben Griffin Wears Aviators on Tour — And Why It Might Have Saved His Vision

If you’ve watched PGA Tour events recently, you might have noticed something unusual: Ben Griffin, one of the Tour’s rising stars, often plays wearing a distinct pair of aviator-style sunglasses. In a sport where most pros squint through bright fairways without eyewear, his look stands out — and fans are curious.

So why doesn’t everyone else wear sunglasses? And why does Griffin make them a must-have?

The Sunglasses Mystery in Pro Golf

Unlike baseball or cycling, where eyewear is standard, most professional golfers avoid sunglasses during play. Many believe sunglasses interfere with depth perception, reading greens, or simply feel awkward during the swing.

But Ben Griffin’s choice to wear them isn’t about fashion — it’s about protecting his vision.

“I Had Eight Retinal Holes”: Griffin’s Medical Wake-Up Call

About a year ago, Griffin began noticing floaters in his vision — those drifting black shapes that appear when looking at bright skies or screens. What started as an annoyance turned into something serious.

“I went to an eye doctor and realized my retina was starting to try to detach itself. I had retinal holes.”

The diagnosis? Eight retinal holes across both eyes — and the threat of permanent vision loss within 5–6 months if left untreated.

He underwent laser surgery to reinforce his retinas. The procedure saved his vision — but the floaters didn’t disappear.

“I had to get the surgery just to maintain my level.”

Why Ben Griffin Wears Aviator Sunglasses on Tour

Griffin still sees floaters, but he’s found relief in his now-signature aviator sunglasses.

“When I wear sunglasses, it’s a little bit darker out, so I don’t see the floaters as well. But if it’s bright out and I’m not wearing them — I look into the clouds and see black stuff everywhere.”

The sunglasses help him stay focused. And now, they’ve become part of his identity.

Standing Out — And Performing

In a field where eyewear is rare, Griffin’s look is catching attention — especially as he continues to perform consistently well on Tour. His calm demeanor, clean ball striking, and stylish shades have helped build a growing fanbase.

And it’s not just about looks — it’s about function meeting confidence.

Should More Golfers Consider Sunglasses?

Ben Griffin’s story is a reminder that golf is deeply personal, and what works for one player won’t work for another. While some may continue avoiding eyewear for comfort or perception, Griffin shows that, in some cases, it’s more than just personal preference — it’s essential.

With rising awareness around eye health and UV protection, perhaps golf’s sunglasses stigma is due for a rethink.

Whether you wear shades for style or survival, Ben Griffin’s journey is a compelling example of how athletes adapt — and sometimes, stand out by necessity.

So next time you see a golfer rocking aviators down the fairway, think twice. It might not be just for looks.
